#1 Family of Little Feet

In The Family of Little Feet Cisnero uses characterization to show how the girls were maturing. Still young Esperanza and her friends were high heels around town, but to their dismay they were not expecting the reactions they received. While wearing the shoes the girls feel like Cinderella. Rachel teaches them how to strut “cross and uncross our legs, and how to run like double-dutch rope”. The girls wonder why the men can’t take their eyes off them, but they soon begin to understand as the day goes on. Mr. Benny warns them about wearing the shoes because he knows that some people will try to take advantage of them, “Them are dangerous, he says.” He was trying to help the girls instead of attempting to gain from their innocence. As the day goes on the high heel wearing girls find more and more unpleasant people who would disrespect them as children. The boy on the homemade bicycle calls out ” Ladies, lead me to heaven.” portrays the slow climb of disturbing men. As a young man probably a little older than them could see how Esperanza and the girls were maturing with their “long long leg.” As they keep walking they progressively see that the high heels can attract unwelcome attention. Esperanza and the girls run into a bum who offers a kiss for a dollar. Rachel (the one who taught them how to walk in the shoes) almost takes the deal, but before she can go through with it Lucy has come to relish what the bum really wanted.
