#2 That cloud is God

In the vignette Darius & the Clouds , a little boy named Darius makes a profound statement about what a single cloud looks like to him. After talking about the clouds he points out one cloud and says,”That one right there. See there. That’s God, Darius said. God? somebody little asked. God, he said and made it simple.”(34)  This is coming from a child who doesn’t like school and is mostly a fool, but has the capability to understand something as profound as such. When another kid younger than him asked “God?” he just responded as if the child should understand. In the vignette Esperanza was surprised that such a profound observation could come from a boy like Darius. He always tried to act tough and not care about school, but when it came to much simpler matters he was one of the few children who grasped the concept of God being a cloud. To the other children around him they may have only seen the cloud at face value, and not put much thought into it. Darius, on the other hand something more poetic than just a cloud. Esperanza admired the fact that Darius, the boy who “chases girls with firecrackers or a stick that touched a rat and think he’s tough.”. Even though he is just a child Darius understood the weight of the words he was saying and how his words changed the out look on life to Esperanza. She never would have guessed that a profound statement would come from the most prosaic person she knew.
