Esperanza is the main character in the novel The House on Mango Street.  She has seen what happens if she can not breakaway from her surroundings. Her mother dropped out of school, her grandmother and many of the other women she knew have been entrapped. Through out the book she finds herself and strives to overcome the obstacles in her way. Just like in Kelly Clarkson’s song “Breakaway” Esperanza grow up in a small town. In some ways Esperanza wants to spread her wings and learn how to fly to breakaway from her live on Mango street. Close to the end of the book, Esperanza meets three sisters who warns her not to forget who she is and where she came from But I won’t forget all the ones that I love. She wants to own her own house and to have the things she could not have had as a child and make a change. Esperanza wants to find herself and leave away from the house on Mango street that she calls home. When she decides that she wants to be strong and independent, Esperanza will  do what it takes til’ I touch the sky.
