In the picture there is a cow who is confused about what it’s suppose to say. Instead of saying moo just like the rest of the ‘normal’ cows it does not. It may be from the cow trying to be different than the others or its just wrong. Esperanza want to be different from her family in a way that is not as confusing as a cow saying meow. She wants to breakaway from her neighborhood and the entrapment that she sees happen to the women around her. All throughout the novel Esperanza wanted to be free and move into a real house and not have to be look down upon ever again. She wants to own her own house without any ties to her old life, but she relishes that she can’t move forward without knowing where she comes from. Esperanza has identified herself as a strong, independent woman, who doesn’t need a man to help her accomplish her dreams, “ I have begun my own quiet war. Simple. Sure. I am one who leaves the table like a man.” The only thing that Esperanza does not want to forget is where she came from and who she is. From the Lion King Mufasa tells his son Simba to “Remember who you are”, much like how the three sisters told Esperanza “You can’t forget who you are.”.
